There are lots of things to love about the holidays. Being with family and friends. Eating great food and desserts. But it’s so easy to overdo it! So how do you stay healthy and safe during the holidays? Here are a few tips. We hope you find them helpful.
Water is your best friend
Good hydration is important to health no matter what time of year it is. Be sure to drink plenty of water. Consider drinking water over alcohol or sugary drinks at holiday gatherings.
Take steps to manage your stress
The holidays can be a stressful time. Busy schedules, lack of rest and sleep, anxiety created by making preparations – these things can all lead to increased levels of stress. It is important to manage stress. Don’t take on too much. Make time for yourself and most of all be sure to get enough sleep.
Make healthy food choices
These days there are plenty of “healthy options” when it comes to food choices. A quick internet such can turn up hundreds of healthy recipes. Don’t be pressured to serve the same old (unhealthy) fare, choose wisely.
Get some exercise
It happens to many of us this time of year. We get busy running around. We eat too much. And we don’t get enough sleep. The first thing to suffer is our exercise regime. Remember, ANY exercise is GOOD exercise. It doesn’t need to be a hard cardio or strength workout to be effective. Walk to the grocery store. Go for a hike. Keep moving, that’s what’s most important.
Wash your hands often
We’ve heard this again and again through COVID … “wash your hands”! It’s hard to refute the science. Hand washing is one of the most effective ways to reduce the spread of germs and viruses. Do it often.
Be mindful of the weather
We all love a gentle snowfall during the holidays. It is, after all, such a Canadian thing! Weather can also create a health and safety risks so be vigilant. Take extra care when walking or driving. Watch for icy spots on sidewalks and roadways.
