Superfoods Part #3 – Onions

Onions are the third subject of our 4-part series on superfoods.

Leeks, chives, scallions, red onions, yellow onions, and shallots are types of alliums. Alliums are natural antibiotics, and we would all do well to include healthy portions in our diets. To truly benefit from onions, we need to make them more central to our lives.

Onions are often falsely associated with an upset tummy, heartburn, and/ or indigestion. They are not irritants but rather may signal that you have issues with your gut. Onions work to eliminate unproductive bacteria in the gut and the resulting die-off can lead to a little discomfort.

The ability to fend off harmful bacteria also enhances the body’s natural production of vitamin B12 which is essential for red blood cell formulation, strong metabolism, and neurologic functions.

In addition, onions are high in trace minerals such as zinc, manganese, iodine, and selenium. As a result, they are also effective in skin rejuvenation and protecting the lungs. If you want to look younger, eat onions every day!
